What is Forging?

Forging is divided into manual forging and machine forging, and machine forging is divided into free forging and press forging. We commonly used cold heading, cold forging, hot forging are all press forging, need to use the mold Cold forging is a metal working process. At room temperature, the metal billet is subjected to pressure by a mold to produce plastic deformation of the metal, thereby obtaining parts of the desired shape and size. Cold heading is mainly used for processing bolts, nuts and other standard parts, is the use of mold at room temperature to make metal wire or bar block rough, such as upsetting one end of the wire into a bolt head, high production efficiency and stable product quality. Hot forging is carried out at high temperature (steel is generally 800-1250 ℃), and the billet is heated above the recrystallization temperature, and the plasticity increases and the deformation resistance decreases. Recrystallization can eliminate work hardening and is suitable for large and complex parts. Cold forging is also carried out at room temperature, through pressure to produce plastic deformation of the metal, the process will appear work hardening. It is suitable for the production of parts with relatively simple shape, high precision and large batch. Compared with hot forging, the dimensional accuracy of parts after cold forging is higher, because there is no effect of thermal expansion and contraction. The surface quality is also better and a higher finish can be achieved.

Cold forging

Cold forging is at room temperature, the metal blank is placed in the mold cavity, and the metal blank is extruded from the concave die hole or the gap between the convex and concave dies through the pressure of the press, so as to obtain the required shape of the part. For example, some parts with complex internal cavities, such as some hollow shaft parts in automotive parts, can be manufactured by cold extrusion process. Cold extrusion can process parts with complex shapes and high precision requirements, and the material utilization rate is high, which can save metal materials

Hot forging

Hot forging is a forging process carried out under high temperature conditions. First, the metal billet is heated. Under high temperature environment, the plasticity of the metal billet is greatly increased and the deformation resistance is significantly reduced. Then, the heated metal billet is placed in the mold cavity, and the press and other equipment apply pressure or impact force to make the metal billet plastic deformation in the mold, and then obtain the desired shape of the part. Hot forging is advantageous for making some parts with complex shapes and special structures inside, because the high temperature allows the metal to fill the complex space more easily like a liquid.

Aluminum

Pure aluminum (such as 1060) has a soft texture and good plasticity, and can be easily formed in cold heading processing. Aluminum alloy (such as 6061, 7075) by adding magnesium, zinc and other elements, improve the strength and hardness, but also through the cold heading process to produce some lightweight parts

Brass

Pure copper (such as T2) has good electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and plasticity, and is easy to cold heading. It can be used to make connecting parts in electrical equipment, etc. Copper alloys, such as brass (H62, H68), add zinc and other elements on the basis of copper, improve the strength and wear resistance, while maintaining good plasticity, can be used to manufacture a variety of decorative cold heading parts, such as connecting parts in crafts, decorative fasteners of furniture, etc

Iron

Q235, low carbon content, has good plasticity and toughness. 45 steel, moderate carbon content. Its strength is higher than low carbon steel, but the plasticity is slightly worse. Higher carbon content, such as T10 steel. This kind of steel has high hardness, good wear resistance, but poor plasticity

FAQs

The two primary CNC machining processes are CNC turning and CNC milling. Other machining processes include drilling, gear hobbing and electrical discharge machining, grinding among others.
Parts machined with metal will follow ISO 2768-m (medium) or ISO 2768-f (fine). Parts machined with plastics will follow 2768-m (medium). Geometric tolerances down to ± 0.001mm are possible but must be clearly indicated in technical drawings. We can achieve tighter tolerances on shafts with up to H7 fits with manual quoting and on occasion tighter.
We offer CNC milling (3-axis, 3+2-axis and 5-axis) and turning. Milled parts can be machined up to 2000 x 1500 x 300 mm for 3, 3+2 axis CNC milling. For 5-axis milling, the maximum part size is 650 x 650 x 300 mm. The maximum diameter for CNC turning is 431mm, length 990 mm. Minimum part dimensions recommended are around 2 x 2 x 2mm.The minimum for feature dimensions is 0.5 mm.

Deburing and edge breaking are standard procedures for all CNC machined parts. lf there are any critical edges that should be left sharp, they must be clearly indicated in technical drawings. Surfaces will be free of defects such as scratches, dents, stains, blemishes, hanging marks, minor defects. Surfaces indicated ascritical (primary (a) side, as indicated on the technical drawing) will be free of mill steps and other marks. For the secondary (b) side, minor hanging marks and up to 2 minor defects are acceptable. A number of post-processing and finishing methods can be applied to improve the surface roug hness, visual properties andwear resistance of machined parts.
We offer UNF, UNC, and metric threads for machining along with coil and key inserts. These are available on both milled or turned CNC parts.

Mastersdex caters to both one-off prototype and large-scale production runs. Thus, there is typically no strict MOQ. Whether you need a single part or thousands, Mastersdex aims to provide a solution.

Lead times can vary based on the complexity of the design, the chosen material, and the current workload. However, one of the advantages of CNC machining is its speed, especially for simpler parts. Once the setup is complete, machining times can be relatively quick. Parts machined as fast as 1 day! But for an accurate estimate, it’s best to request for quotes directly.
Product designers and engineers choose CNC machining to rapidly produce prototypes and production parts. The manufacturing technology offers a high level of precision, engineering-grade materials, quick-turn lead times.
Industries that use CNC machining include aerospace, automotive parts manufacturing, medical machine manufacturing, transportation, defense, and marine industries, along with oil and gas industries and electronics. CNC machining has allowed these industries to become more efficient at mass-producing custom CNC parts.
